The 15th "HEP Cup"Business English Debate Competition and the 2024 National College Innovationand Entrepreneurship Series Finals were successfully held on October 27th inthe Second Lecture Hall of the Library and Information Center at ShanghaiUniversity of Engineering Science (SUES). The event was co-organized by theTranslation Services Committee of theTranslators Association of China, Higher Education Press,Shanghai International Studies Association, and Shanghai Technology Exchange,and hosted by the School of Foreign Languages at SUES.
Eight finalist teams faced off in athrilling competition, engaging in fierce debates and presenting theirviewpoints on real business cases in English. This showcased the contestants‘comprehensive strengths in cross-cultural communication, business acumen, andpublic speaking, highlighting the sharp observational skills and vibrant energyof the post-2000s generation. The competition culminated in the awarding of oneBest Debater, one Special Prize, one First Prize (Gold), six First Prize(Silver), and one Gold Award for Business Plan. SUES's team "Hello,Kitty" secured the Gold Award for Business Plan.
Zhang Hui, Director of the ShanghaiCertification Management Center of the International English Education ResearchAssociation, Wang Chengtao, Secretary of the Party Committee of the EngineeringTraining Center (Innovation and Entrepreneurship College) at SUES, and LiuJinlong, Deputy Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, attended the event.The judging panel included Wen Jianping, Vice President of the Shanghai ForeignLanguage Association, Du Lijuan, Deputy Dean of the School of Foreign Languagesat SUES, Yang Junfeng, former Vice President and Professor at Dalian Universityof Foreign Languages, Xiao Hui, Vice Chairman of the Jiangsu Association ofScientific and Technical Translators, Feng Weilan, Deputy Dean of the School ofForeign Languages at Shanghai University of Electric Power, Gu Haiyue, coremember of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research Center at ShanghaiUniversity, and Zhang Xiang, researcher at the Automotive Industry InnovationResearch Center at North China University of Technology.
To ensure the success of the event,the School of Foreign Languages at SUES formed a dedicated working group.Faculty and student volunteers worked together to lay the groundwork for awell-organized competition. On the day of the event, the school arranged forcore faculty members and student audiences to watch the entire contest, whichbroadened their international business horizons, allowed them to witness theprowess of top young debaters from across the nation, and listen to insightfulcomments and industry reports from professional judges and guests, furtheraligning with industry and international standards.
The "HEP Cup" BusinessEnglish Debate Competition, with the theme of "Innovation,Entrepreneurship, and Internationalization," aims to strengthen collegestudents' awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship, expand their globalperspective, and develop their critical thinking, logical reasoning, languageexpression, improvisational skills, and teamwork. The competition buildsbridges for collaboration between universities and businesses, promotesinnovation and entrepreneurship education in higher education, and enhancescommunication and cooperation among various universities and their departments.
