Translation Department of theSchool of Foreign Languages Holding a Salon on the Topic of “Translator Ethics”

 

 

Onthe afternoon of September 27, 2024, Translation Department of the School ofForeign Languages held a salon on the topic of “Translator Ethics” in Room 1508of the Administrative Building. The salon was attended by Qian Huimin, PartySecretary of the Joint Party Committee of the School of Mathematics and Schoolof  Foreign Languages, Liu Jinlong, Vice Dean of the School of ForeignLanguages, as well as faculty and students.

AssociateProfessor Wu Yuanqiong began the salon by presenting and discussing thevaluable historical materials from the British sinologist Hawkes’ translationof Hong Lou Meng. She elaborated on how Hawkes balanced hisresponsibilities to the original author, the original work, and the readersduring the process of translating this Chinese literary classic into English.The discussion highlighted the efforts and difficult choices involved,showcasing the pursuit of a great translator who, over a decade-longtranslation process, studied Chinese culture, integrated world civilizations, andstrived to transform this Chinese literary canon into an English literarymasterpiece.

Dr.Yu Meiping and Dr. Wang Jue engaged in a lively discussion with the faculty andstudents present on the multidimensional nature of translation ethics and therelationship between translation ethics and translator ethics.

TheSchool of Foreign Languages focuses on enhancing the research capabilities ofits faculty and promoting ethical standards in translation research. Throughacademic exchanges and other forms of engagement, the school consistently worksto improve the research ethics of both faculty and students, as well as theprofessional ethics and moral levels of teachers.
