Days ago the School of Foreign Studies held the Sixth English salon at the 4th Yiban Activity Center according to its routine. Besides students from the School of Foreign Studies, students from other Schools who are interested in English study came to the salon. Their participation enabled participants to carry out more different exchanges and rendered the activities more exciting.
The salon was mainly centered around English rhetoric called “Figure of Speech”. Under the guidance of the foreign teacher, Ms. Pam, the students discussed about the time capsule. The items put into the capsule range everything from hair to nuclear weapons, which fully embodies the students’ whimsies and their enthusiasm towards the salon. In the course of the activity, the students from the School of Foreign Studies and students from other Schools formed groups to positively think about the related matters and communicate with each other; thus the atmosphere of learning English became more and more intense.
In class, Ms. Pam let students to make sentences to understand the exquisite English rhetoric, so that students could appreciate the beauty of English rhetoric which is different from Chinese rhetoric. Subsequently, the Sharon shifted to the topic of English literature rhetoric. The foreign teacher recommended the short story Irish Writer James Joyce who is famous for stream of consciousness; then everyone could not help reminding Ms. Dai Congrong who was introduced in the modern Chinese class and is an expert specializing in studying Joyce. All the students could not help but feel that knowledge has no borders and many countries have their education in common.
The English Salon not only increased the students’ understanding of English rhetorical devices, but also improved the students’ oral expression skills and even promoted the communication and cooperation among the Schools. The students expressed their expectation for the next salon activities. Regular English salon activities are an effective way to create a good English learning atmosphere. It is reported that the School of Foreign Studies will hold weekly English salon and English morning reading and strive to promote push students ahead and build a good style of learning.
