The Foreign Languages Department (FLD) under School of Fundamental Studies in SUES has, since its inception, been responsible for the instruction of English and Japanese for non-English majors, graduate students and associate-degree college students. There are 51 teachers, including 1 professor, 11 associate professors, thirty-six lecturers, three teaching assistants. Among them, one is doctor of philosophy, three are working towards their Ph.D. degrees, and 36 are holders of master’s degrees. Meanwhile, FLD has a modern language lab, including a simultaneous translation lab, a foreign language teaching broadcasting station, and a low-frequency transmitter network.

FLD employs advanced pedagogical philosophies as its guide, in the spirit of unity and enterprise, by means of strict management and in-depth research into pedagogy, and has evolved systematic doctrines of college English instruction and management. Based on the successes achieved in the previous years, FLD carries out reforms by dividing the original English instruction into three segments: comprehensive English section, listening comprehension section and spoken English section, thus having fostered a unique culture of keeping abreast with the times and taking the initiative to meet the ever-changing demands of China’s economic and development, and striving to be vanguards of the college English teaching reform.

FLD has a strong teaching staff committed to excellent professional competence. All the teachers work hard to improve themselves by studying for higher degrees and avail themselves of every opportunity to pursue further education at home or abroad with a view to enhancing their language proficiency and sharpen their competitive edges of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Their efforts are rewarded by their high job approval by their students.

The FLD teachers follow the state-of-the-art educational theories, dedicate themselves to exploring and researching into the students' psychology and second language acquisition laws, and trying to stimulate students' motivation to learn, to improve students’ interest in learning and learning-by-oneself ability to help students effectively employ strategies of foreign languages learning. In addition to the always impressive passing percentages of CET-4 and CET-6, FLD also organizes many English competitions and English speech contests to help students prepare for the competitive events at the municipal level or the national level. A great many students have had their names listed on the honor rolls.

FLD takes a road of combining research and instruction. The majority of teachers show great interest in teaching, and the results of their academic research have positively contributed to teaching activities, innovated teaching model, improved teaching efficiency, and optimized curriculum setup. In recent years, the FLD teachers have written a variety of foreign language textbooks, published over 100 research papers.

Driven by China's social development, the economic globalization and the developments of Chinese universities, FLD always puts the curriculum reform and innovation in its priority list. This year, according to the starting levels of the freshmen, the implementation of hierarchical teaching, through a competitive mechanism, has fully aroused the enthusiasm of students; in addition, a groundbreaking effort has been made to offer such applicative courses as writing and translating, advanced reading comprehension, American Studies so that students can get extra professional training to further consolidate their foundation and foreign language proficiencies.

After many years of efforts, FLD has formed a good team spirit. As a highly disciplined team, all members of FLD engage in collective teaching and research activities, brainstorming, cooperation and collaboration. With the efforts of all the teachers, FLD has constructed several “excellent courses (Model Courses?)” in spoken English, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. And a number of teachers have won many prizes in teaching contests at different levels, and some of them won “Teaching Star” titles and etc.

FLD holds fast to the present, looks into the future, and keeps growing up together with the university today and tomorrow.
